Simplicity and economy of form are always important in this case. The basic color scheme is shades of gray, black, silver and white. It is increasingly common that this austere form is also broken with pastel shades of pink, green or, as befits Christmas, red, gold and the now so popular copper.

It is very easy when dressing a Christmas tree to rub up against kitsch, to overdo it most simply. I can’t decide on one style myself, and every year I pull baubles out of my suitcase that are more years old than I am.
This year’s catalogs of Scandinavian interior brands impress with austere arrangements. Their Christmas ideas are eclectic – they combine natural, rough tops, trunks and baskets with the glitter of gold accessories and the geometry of ornaments, and they do it without being unnecessarily pompous, with just the right amount of charm.
